It is very often said that the most difficult is not to climb to the top, but to maintain it sustainably. This is true especially in sports competitions and especially in the League 1 of Ivory Coast. Indeed, if styling the Ivory Coast champion crown as the ASEC Mimosas did, last season, is very difficult because this performance is not within the reach of all teams, keeping that title is more so. Because the champion team has all the others against it. This title is very coveted. He gives his victor the glory and respect all his opponents. He also gives him the opportunity to compete in the highly reputed and lucrative Champions League.
For five seasons, two clubs from the interior of the country, the Séwé Sport of San Pedro and the ace Tanda had challenged the dominance of the two major clubs in Abidjan, the ASEC Mimosas and the Africa sport. The Séwé won the title of Ivory Coast champion for three seasons without discontinuing (2012, 2013 and 2014). The Ace Tanda, just climbed into Ligue 1 in 2014, had passed the Tour de force to win the competition in 2015, and then to retain its title the following season, in 2016. A real feat that was short-lived, however, since the ASEC Mimosas took over the things in hand by snatching this coveted title from the as Tanda, the past season. We can see it, it is possible to be champion of Ivory Coast. But keeping this title sustainable is not given to all teams.
The ASEC Mimosas has shown that it is a strong club capable of succeeding this feat. And he did it several times. Already in the years 1970, the Yellow and black club had been a champion of Ivory Coast successively for four Seasons (1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975). During the decade 1990, under the era Roger Ojo, he won the League 1 eight (8) times. He won six (6) titles in a row in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and En 1995, then twice in succession in 1997 and 1998. Finally, in the first decade of 2000, he won it again 9 times. Seven (7) times without interruption in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, then twice in a row in 2009 and 2010. You really have to be called ASEC Mimosas to succeed such a feat. The Africa Sport of Abidjan, the rival club, has tried it and its best success has been to win the event five (5) times in a row in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989.
For the ASEC Mimosas, the new Ligue 1 which begins is confirmation. The club wants to maintain its long-won title in the past season. It won’t be a small matter. But as shareholders like to say, impossible is not ASEC Mimosas. As the battle begins for a new rite and for the radiance of the ASEC Mimosas.
